Documentary Recommendations

by Scott on 04/16/2011

We’re often asked to give recommendations on documentaries, so I’ve assigned some of the docs we’ve seen to tiers based on my perception of one or more of these criteria in more-or-less this order:

  • the quality of the film itself (vague I know)
  • the lasting effect it had on how I view things
  • the effect it had on me as I watched it
  • how interesting the film was
  • how fun the film was

* = if you aren’t a documentary fan, you may still like those marked with an asterisk

Tier 1 – very highly recommended

Tier 2 – highly recommended

Tier 3 – recommended

Tier 4 – also recommended

Others that came to mind but didn’t make the cut:

  • Bingo! The Documentary
  • Bill Cunningham New York
  • Food, Inc.*
  • Inside Job
  • Jay McCarroll: Eleven Minutes
  • Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child
  • King Corn
  • Men Who Swim
  • Pucker Up
  • Wordplay
