gender reveal

Scott and I decided to have the gender written on a piece of paper and sealed in an envelope at our sonogram appointment and we left thinking we already knew what it said. We both thought we saw boy parts and our tech even said something at the end referencing the baby as “he–well, he or she.” That had been our gut feeling through the pregnancy anyway, so we allowed it to sink in for 24 hours… life with 2 boys, boy names, etc. Scott even told a co-worker and a neighbor that we were having a boy.

The next night we had a date so I took the envelope. When I brought it out we were both thinking we didn’t really need to look at it, but decided to just confirm it anyway. When we opened it and saw what it said my jaw dropped and Scott exclaimed, “GIRL?!” Then we laughed and started trying to make sense of what we thought we saw (do umbilical cords look like boy parts?) and what the tech said (she was 32 weeks pregnant with a boy, so maybe she had boy on the brain). Then Scott asked if maybe the tech had pregnancy brain when she wrote it.  I wondered if there was a way I could call the office and have them double check.

The next day I called and they had the tech who did our sonogram call me back. She remembered us and even mentioned calling the baby “he” which she said she calls all babies “he” sometimes. She wondered if that would throw us off. She also remembered being careful to tell us to look away if she was going to be near any gender parts, so I asked if an umbilical cord could fool people. She said, “Maybe if you don’t see it everyday.”

So after 24 hours of letting it sink in and being so surprised and thrown off, I can’t imagine those who go 4 months or so thinking and planning for one way and delivering the opposite. Most importantly, everything else from the sonogram was normal. We are feeling so thankful and blessed. We are excited to meet our little girl in November!
